Zagopodny abscess (retropharyngeal abscess)- is a purulent unfolding of the lymph nodes and loose tissue of the pharyngeal space, bounded by the prevertebral plate of the cervical fascia, the buccal-pharyngeal fascia, the fascia and the cellular tissue surrounding the vascular nerve bundle of the neck.

The reasons

Formed as a result of suppuration of the lymph nodes and tissue of the pharyngeal space. The infection penetrates the lymphatic system from the side of the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, auditory tube and middle ear. Sometimes an abscess is a complication of the flu, measles, scarlet fever, can also develop when the mucous membrane of the back wall of the pharynx is wounded with a foreign body, solid food. It is observed, as a rule, in early childhood in malnourished and weak children.

Symptoms

Complaints of gagging and sharp pain when swallowing are typical, while the food does not often fall into the nose. The patient refuses food. When the abscess is located in the nasopharynx, nasal breathing is disturbed, closed nasalness appears. When an abscess spreads to the lower parts of the pharynx, inspiratory dyspnea occurs, accompanied by wheezing, especially in the upright position of the patient. Body temperature reaches 39-40 gr. C. Characterized by the forced position of the head:

she is thrown back and inclined to the sore side. Swelling behind the corner of the lower jaw and along the anterior margin of the sternoclavicular-mastoid muscle is not often observed.

Complications. Acute swelling of the entrance to the larynx or spontaneous opening with suffocation due to pus entering the laryngeal cavity; pus can spread to the region of the large vessels of the neck or descend along the prevertebral fascia into the chest cavity and cause purulent mediastinitis or constricted trachea.

Diagnostics

The diagnosis is confirmed by pharyngoscopy, in which fluctuating swelling is found on the back of the throat. In the first days of the disease, the spherical protrusion of the posterior pharyngeal wall is located on one side, and later on along the midline. In doubtful cases, produce a diagnostic puncture.
